The ‘Centre for Epilepsy and Psycho-Organic Disorders’ (CEPOS) is located in a public park, between the town centre and train station of Duffel. The project consists of a complete renovation of an L-shaped pavilion from the 1960s and a more recent wing from the late 1980s. This project proved to be a tremendous challenge considering the narrow timeframe in which the proposal had to be designed, licensed and commissioned. ‘Durability’ and ‘energy performance’ are the main concepts that shaped the design process. The original structure was stripped to the core and the existing roof was replaced by a fitting 2nd and 3rd floor in prefabricated timber construction. Eco-equipment such as ‘fully automated screens’ and a ‘BEO-field’ for heat recovery and pre-cooling was also integrated. Thermal insulation lines the entire volume and was finished with vertical thermowood panelling and white aluminium frames giving a fresh, sleek and relevant outcome.
